The Enquiring Schools programme is an exciting new service offered by Futurelab at NFER. It is designed to promote innovation in teaching and learning by engaging teachers in and with research. Evidence shows this to be one of the most effective ways to bring about deep professional learning and sustainable improvement in schools.

Why innovation matters
In education, as in all other fields of human endeavour, there are always new challenges to face and new opportunities to explore, to best meet the needs of students. How as teachers do we respond to the emerging evidence about how the brain works? How do we develop our practice to embrace new evidence of what works in terms of pedagogy, curriculum and assessment? How do we design learning to develop more creative and enterprising young people fit for life in the C21st? How do we exploit the wonderful opportunities offered by technology?
There will always be questions to answer and new opportunities to enhance what we do. The Enquiring Schools programme helps schools to explore some of these questions, and keep improving their offer to students.
Everyone a learner
We believe that in an enquiring school everyone is a learner... teachers, school leaders as well as pupils.
As a result, the Enquiring Schools programme is not a traditional ‘one-size-fits’ all approach to professional development but an initiative that seeks to unleash the imagination and energy of teachers as they engage in innovation to develop their professional practice. Through rich and varied activities, engagement with evidence and collaborative enquiry they become actively engaged in their own professional growth.
We know that teachers who engage in and with research enjoy the experience and value the benefits it brings to themselves and, most importantly, the positive impact it has on the children they teach.
The Enquiring Schools website sets out how the programme works and what participating schools can expect from the scheme. Information is also provided on the Enquiring Schools Innovation Award and the different ways schools, federations and individuals can get involved.
